Since CMA Fest couldn’t happen in 2020, the CMA put together a virtual event for fans to enjoy in its place. Called CMA Summer Stay-Cay, the event took place on July 1, 2020.

The hours-long event featured Q&A sessions, interviews, and performances. One of the star performers of the night was Carly Pearce, whose collaboration with Lee Brice, “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” had recently hit #1.

With “I Hope You’re Happy Now” being one of the biggest songs in country music at the time, Pearce and Brice sang it on the CMA Summer Stay-Cay special.

That wasn’t the only performance Pearce shared during CMA Summer Stay-Cay. She also participated in a 90s country cover challenge, with her competitors being Russell Dickerson and Dustin Lynch.

Pearce kept the 90s theme going with a solo performance. She chose to cover The Chicks‘ 1999 single “Cowboy Take Me Away.”

“Cowboy Take Me Away” was released as the second single off of The Chicks’ album Fly. The song reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs in the U.S. and crossed over to claim the #27 spot on the all-genre Hot 100.

Today, when people think of The Chicks, “Cowboy Take Me Away” is still one of the first songs that comes to mind.

“Cowboy Take Me Away” is a delicate, tender song…one that Pearce’s voice is well-suited for. In fact, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think the song was her own based on how her voice fits it.

We’re glad the CMA put together the Summer Stay-Cay to take the place of CMA Fest in 2020. Because if it hadn’t been for this event, we never would have heard this outstanding performance of Pearce’s.

Tune in below to see Pearce’s take on “Cowboy Take Me Away.”

Pearce often delivers covers, and we’ve heard her sing everything from Dolly Parton‘s “9 to 5” to Patty Loveless‘ “Sorrowful Angels.” Which traditional/classic country song would you like to hear her sing in the future?
