Tim McGraw Reflects On The Past In His New, Emotionally Charged Song, “King Rodeo”

Tim McGraw has released a comeback song after taking a step away from the spotlight to focus on his health, and it’s called “King Rodeo.”

Fittingly, McGraw performed “King Rodeo” when he delivered a headline performance at the inaugural Music City Rodeo on May 31. The performance marked McGraw’s first time singing live in nearly a year.

“King Rodeo” later debuted on The BIG 615’s Storme Warren Show on June 12. Speaking about the song before playing it for his listeners, Warren said, “It’s a powerful song about growing older but not yet being willing to throw in the towel. No one interprets that message better than Tim.”

Warren’s interpretation of the song is spot-on. The sentimental track has McGraw taking on the role of a rodeo cowboy reflecting on his past.

The lyrics are charged with emotion, as the cowboy recognizes how things simply aren’t the same as they used to be. But despite his age and the passage of time, he can’t give up on the lifestyle that’s shaped him into the man he is.

As McGraw sings:

So the spotlight’s faded, you moved a little past your prime. Don’t let ’em make you jaded, ’cause you can’t turn back time. Tomorrow’s like a woman, you can’t understand. Lady Luck’s been good to you so take her by the hand. Hey King Rodeo. We’re all getting older. Saddle’s hard, the nights grow colder.”

On August 1, McGraw released the audio for “King Rodeo” and dropped an accompanying video at 11 AM ET. The modern performance footage featured in the video was filmed during McGraw’s show at the Music City Rodeo. That footage is woven with clips of McGraw from the earlier eras of his career.

Tim McGraw Has Undergone Multiple Surgeries In The Past Year

McGraw has been open about the fact that the past year has been challenging for him. He’s undergone multiple surgeries, including three on his back.

These operations made McGraw question if he’d have to permenantly step away from performing live. He shared this fear during a conversation on Tracy Lawrence‘s podcast, telling him:

“I can tell you that after double knee replacements and three back surgeries and now a torn rotator cuff and a ruptured disc, all the things that are going on, there were times this year that I thought this might be it. This might be time to hang it up.”

McGraw’s health issues forced him to back out of an upcoming Netflix series about a professional bull rider. He orignally planned to star in the series and serve as an executive producer.

Hearing “King Rodeo,” one can’t help but wonder if McGraw picked up the song with the intention of having it featured in the show.

McGraw was also forced to cancel his appearance at the the Professional Bull Riders Last Cowboy Standing event. Shortly after announcing that cancellation, McGraw was seen leaning on a cane while out to dinner with his wife, Faith Hill.

Thankfully, it seems that McGraw has been feeling better lately. He was recently photographed walking into a recording studio…which could mean that a new album is in the works. The pictures also show McGraw sporting a clean-shaven head, which is a new look for the singer and 1883 star.
