The four-part docuseries dives into the personal side of Willie Nelson‘s life, shedding light on his family and loved ones, including his children and his late sister, Bobbie. It also features rare footage capturing various aspects of Nelson’s life, plus interviews with notable figures such as Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Sheryl Crow, and more.

The “Fork” Fight With His First Wife

Additionally, Nelson recounted an incident where his first wife, Martha Matthews, threw a fork with such force that he claimed, “it stuck in my side.” Describing Matthews as a “dark-haired beauty” and a “full-blooded Cherokee,” Nelson was married to her from 1952 to 1962. They first met when Matthews was 16, and Nelson was 19, and he noted that they both indulged in heavy drinking during that period.

“My mother didn’t want me to marry because I was as young as I was, so we just ran off,” Matthews, who died of liver failure in 1989, said in a voiceover.

Despite the fork-throwing episode and acknowledging their fair share of conflicts, Nelson reflected on the decade-long union with Matthews, stating that they had “a lot of fun together.” Following their divorce, Nelson went on to marry three more times. His subsequent marriages were with Shirley Collie, spanning from 1963 to 1971, followed by Connie Koepke from 1971 to 1988. Finally, he found lasting companionship with Annie D’Angelo, whom he has been married to since 1991.
