Nashville-based trio DEK of Hearts brought pure country to The Voice Season 28 premiere with a JoDee Messina cover.
The Voice is back! Season 28 kicked off Monday night (September 22) and there appears to be no shortage of country acts hoping to impress returning coach, Reba McEntire. After a one-season hiatus, Reba is back and hopes to earn her second Voice win. She won Season 25 with Asher HaVon.
Joining Reba on this season’s coaching panel is Snoop Dogg who is returning for his second season, Michael Buble who has two straight wins to his credit, and two-time winner Niall Horan.
During Monday night’s premiere, Nashville-based trio DEK of Hearts took the stage for a jaw dropping performance of JoDee Messina’s “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” The song, released in 1996 as Messina’s debut single, is a playlist staple for lovers of ’90s country music.
All four coaches turned their chairs within moments of the performance’s start.
Each coach pulled out all the stops in an effort to sway the group to join their team. Michael Buble, Niall Horan, and Team Snoop encouraged the trio to take an unexpected choice and join them, instead of the obvious choice of Reba.
But Reba fought hard telling them, “I love with all lmy heart 3-part harmony. It touches the core of my being. I can’t tell you how important this is for y’all to be on my team. Y’all are gonna make it to the finals.”
Despite Reba’s pleading, Dek of Hearts shocked the coaches by choosing to join Team Niall. “We’re a country trio, but we’re a pop-country trio,” they said before announcing their choice.
Niall was clearly stunned, as was Reba who laid down on the floor and “cried” that she lost out on the group.
