Legendary Tammy Wynette made her name in country music as the “First Lady Of Country Music” with hit songs like “Stand By Your Man.” While many of her songs revolve around love and loneliness – it is in her gospel songs that Wynette’s hopeful voice truly shines through.
One song that Wynette used to send chills down our spins was “How Great Thou Art.” A Christian hymn from the 1800s – the timeless song is a staple in the religious community. So much so, that Christianity Today named it #2 on their list of ‘Favorite Hymns.’ Combine that with Wynette’s enchanting voice – and you have a match made in heaven!
While Wynette had sung the hymn numerous times, we were given a rare treat when she teamed up with country gospel legends to perform a church-choir inspired rendition of the song.
Wynette opens the show by acknowledging all of the soulful musicians that game to join her.
She even takes the time to honor all the gospel artists who have inspired her career saying, “I wanna dedicate the entire show to Hovie Lister, Rosie Roselle, Vestal and Howard Goodman, and the Cathedrals – and 100 others heroes of mine that I have in gospel music.”
As the singers join together for one of the most beautiful versions of “How Great Thou Art” that we have ever listened to – you can hear Wynette’s distinct voice patiently carry them through in praise.
