Legendary Actor Robert Redford Passed Away On Tuesday (Sept. 16)

Robert Redford, who began his acting career in the 1950s, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, his publicist Cindi Berger says.

The legendary actor died in his sleep at the age of 89 at his home in Utah.

Redford’s cause of death is unknown at this time.

He is survived by his children Shauna Jean Redford and Amy Hart Redford, and was preceded in death by his children Scott Anthony Redford, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at 212 months, and David James Redford, who died of cancer at 58 years old. Redford had his four children with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen.

He is also survived by his seven grandchildren and his wife of 16 years, Sibylle Szaggars.

Robert Redford Was A Legendary Actor, Producer, And Director

Redford has over 80 acting credits to his name, while he has been the executive producer of 57 films and directed ten throughout his legendary career.

In fact, his only Academy Award win is not for acting, but directing! He won Best Director at the 1980 Academy Awards for the movie Ordinary People.

Redford was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2002. Variety reports that the statue reads, “Robert Redford — Actor, Director, Producer, Creator of Sundance, inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers everywhere.”

His other accolades include two Golden Globes, a BAFTA Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award (1994), the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award (1996), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2016).

His acting credits include Barefoot in the ParkButch Cassidy and the Sundance KidJeremiah Johnson, and The Candidate, The Sting, Inside Daisy Clover, The Way We WereThree Days of the CondorAll the President’s MenThe Electric HorsemanBrubakerThe NaturalOut of Africa, and Sneakers.

His last acting role is in one episode of the AMC series Dark Winds, where he is played a chess player, though IMDb says it was an uncredited role.

Redford is responsible for creating the legendary Sundance Film Festival, which was named after his character in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The Sundance Film Festival is now the largest film festival for independent movies in the country.

He was a legend, and he will never be forgotten.
