Kelly Clarkson Covers “Blue Christmas” For “Kellyoke” On The Kelly Clarkson Show

We’ve heard her sing pop, rock, jazz, R&B, country, and more. Country seems to be one of her favorite genres, as she’s covered songs by Wynonna Judd, Travis Tritt, and Blake Shelton, to name a few.

On another episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson shared a cover of “Blue Christmas.” She previously covered the song for her 2013 Christmas album, Wrapped in Red.

While the song has been performed by many artists over the years, Elvis Presley recorded the most recognizable version.

The History Behind “Blue Christmas”

Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson wrote “Blue Christmas” together. The song was first recorded by Doye O’Dell in 1948.

Presley recorded his version of “Blue Christmas” in 1957. It was first featured on his holiday LP Elvis’ Christmas Album.

Presley officially released “Blue Christmas” as a single in 1964. He later released a second, live version of the song following his ’68 Comeback Special.

As popular as his recording was, Presley did receive some backlash after releasing “Blue Christmas.” Priscilla Presley once recalled how he caused “quite a stir” with the song:

It was a very bluesy, very sexy rendition of the song. I know it caused quite a stir on his first album, ‘Elvis’ Christmas,’ back in the day. Because that’s exactly what people were talking about, was how, you know, he was affecting our youth, his morals were terrible, he was the devil because of the way he moved. So I’m sure, which it did, cause a lot of stir back in the day.”

Still, Presley’s version of “Blue Christmas” has since been certified Platinum by the RIAA for the sale of over one million units.
