Cole Swindell had quite the surprise in store for those who tuned in to the 2022 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (November 9).

Swindell started off performing his #1 single, “She Had Me at Heads Carolina.” The track references Jo Dee Messina‘s 1996 debut single, “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” He recently released a remix of “She Had Me at Heads Carolina,” which features Messina.

But the pair decided to take things one step further. Midway through Swindell’s CMA Awards performance, Messina made her way onstage. Her appearance was unannounced…so everyone was stunned to see her there!

Messina jumped in, and started singing “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” much to the crowd’s delight.

Viewers at home loved the performance too. Some of the comments on YouTube were:

“Got chills when I saw Jo Dee!!!! Awesome seeing her sing her song.”

“Great song ! They did a fantastic job singing this together. Jo Dee Messina sounds amazing !”

“She sounded just as amazing as the original recording.”

“Jo Dee and her legendary sounding pipes with Cole on stage incredible!”

CHILLS!!! Maybe the best moment of my week when Jo Dee walked out!”
