George Jones was one of the most legendary country singers of all time, and his music has left an indelible mark on the genre. But it wasn’t just his music that made him an icon – it was his love story with his wife Nancy.
Jones and Nancy were married for over 30 years, and their relationship was marked by love, devotion, and a deep connection that was evident in every aspect of their lives. Jones was known for his wild ways and his struggles with addiction, but he always credited Nancy with being the stabilizing force in his life. She was his rock, his confidante, and his partner in every sense of the word.
“No teenage boy ever fell harder for a girl than I fell for Nancy Sepulvado. When I met my future wife on a blind date in November 1981, I had no idea that someday she would save my life…They say love can change the world. I’m here to testify that it changed one man. Friends, family, doctors, therapists and ministers had tried to save me, but to no avail. But finally the power of love from one woman, Nancy Jones, made the difference,” George Jones wrote in his 1996 autobiography, I Lived to Tell it All.
Their marriage was not without its challenges – they went through periods of separation and reconciliation, and Jones’ battles with addiction put a strain on their relationship. But through it all, they remained committed to each other and to their love.
“God put me with him to help him get the devil out of him,” she said. “God put me there to do a job and I did it,” Nancy shared with The Tennessean.
In the end, it was Nancy who was by Jones’ side when he passed away in 2013, and their love story remains an inspiration to fans of country music and romantics everywhere.
Speaking of his final words, Nancy told The Tennessean, “[The doctor and I] were standing at the foot of the bed, and all of a sudden, he opened his eyes, and I was fixin’ to go toward him, and the doctor kind of held me back.
“George said, ‘Well, hello there.’ He said, ‘I’ve been looking for you.’ He said, ‘My name’s George Jones.’ And he was gone. He closed his eyes and that was the end of it.”
As we remember George Jones and his incredible legacy, let us also honor his marriage to Nancy and the love that they shared. Theirs was a true love story, one that reminds us of the power of commitment, devotion, and the human spirit.
