Until Wednesday night (October 14), only eight artists had ever received Billboard‘s Icon Award. That night, country superstar Garth Brooks became the ninth recipient of the prestigious honor.

The award was given to Brooks during the Billboard Music Awards‘ annual ceremony. Cher, who received the award herself in 2017, was the one who presented the trophy to Brooks:

The Icon award was created a decade ago to honor those outstanding artists who have achieved excellence in the recording studio and on the concert stage,” Cher said. “Their passion for music has made them legends in their own time. And that perfectly describes Garth.”

Brooks later accepted the trophy in the middle of a medley performance, which included some of his biggest hits such as “Friends in Low Places,” “Calling Baton Rogue,” and “The River.”

He first gave his thanks to God, saying, “If I had to thank one person, or one entity, it would be God almighty. Through him, all things are possible.”

After that, the emotional Brooks went on to thank his wife and fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, calling her “the love of my life.”

He then gave thanks to his three daughters, choking up as he said, “My three girls, Taylor, August, Allie, I will love you beyond my time here on this planet.”

Tune in to the video below to watch Brooks’ emotional acceptance speech in its entirety.
