“Never a bad hair day, always a big hair day!”

Dolly Parton’s signature spinto soprano vocal range has made her a household name on the country music scene. From the bouncy “9 to 5” to the emotional ballad “I Will Always Love You,” her music has topped the charts and captured the hearts of fans for over five decades. Despite being 77 years young, Parton’s enthusiasm for her music, fans, and charitable causes has remained strong.

Parton is known for her creative spirit, which was evident from the time she made her first guitar by repurposing an old mandolin and adding two bass guitar strings. Her beautiful vocals, caring nature, and unique style, including high heels, a tiny waist, a showcased bosom, a meticulously put-together wardrobe, long fingernails, and a signature hair and makeup look, make her instantly recognizable throughout the country. Her fans adore her extraordinary appeal, making her a true treasure of Tennessee.

Parton is most likely one of the most imitated artists of all time – from drag shows to stage performances, her legacy continues to inspire. Her love for wigs has become a signature style; with her iconic fluffy blonde strands, curls, and shags, she continues to evolve her locks into a brand in itself.

Parton is a multi-talented singer who has achieved many milestones throughout her career. She earned 25 RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards, making her one of the most honored female country performers of all time. 25 of her songs have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, setting a record for female artists. She has also earned 11 Grammy Awards and a total of 51 Grammy nominations, the second-highest number of nominations for any female artist in the history of the awards.

Although Parton has achieved great success, people still wonder what she looks like without her signature wigs. To help satisfy their curiosity, Parton shared a 1965 photo of herself from her book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. In the photo below, she can be seen at a recording session with Monument Records, sporting her natural locks.

Before the book, there was the Late Show with David Letterman. In 1987, when Parton made her second of six guest appearances, Letterman surprised her by bringing out her high school senior yearbook. He exclaimed, “You were a knockout in high school! I guess we couldn’t have guessed that!” As he turned the pages, he flipped the yearbook to the audience and revealed a beautiful photo of Dolly from her school days. Parton was quick to laugh, “Look at that hairdo! I might add, too, that was not a wig. That was before I started wearing them.”
