The year was 1980 and three women in the workplace were ready for revenge on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss. Those three women were Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda – and their place of work was the fictional company Consolidated Companies in the movie 9 to 5.
In the years since the film was made, 9 to 5 has become a classic, ranking in the American Film Institute’s 100 Funniest Movies list and was even made into a television show, as well as a musical!
Because of its popularity, and the reunion of Tomlin and Fonda in the Netflix show Grace & Frankie, the topic of a sequel has come up quite a few times in recent years.
“Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it,” she said.
This news sent fans into a frenzy, speculating where the story would pick up, seeing as Parton’s character quit her job to become a country western singer, Tomlin’s took over the company, and Fonda’s married the Xerox guy.
Well, wait no longer, 9 to 5 fans! Parton stopped by popular country radio show Ty, Kelly, & Chuck on October 11 to spill some secrets and offered up more information than we thought she would!
“I think that’s one of the reasons they decided to do the sequel now,” Parton said, responding to Kelly’s comment that the movie is still so relevant in this day and age. “Because there’s three new girls that are workin’ at Consolidated…and they’re having those problems – same as we did then.
“So they go, ‘Who are these women that made these changes then? Let’s look ’em up!’ So they find us around the country, all successful women – older women with businesses – so then we kind of get together with them and kind of stir up some fun, get in some trouble.”
“Kidnap, drug, and tie up somebody else?” Kelly asked with a laugh.
“Well, maybe!” Parton responded coyly.
Are you excited for the sequel?! We sure are, even though there’s been no announcement as to when filming will begin or when it will be released.
