You can’t get much more classic than “Good Hearted Woman” performed by one of the original writers of the song, Willie Nelson, and country star Toby Keith.

What was the occasion?  Willie called a few well-known friends together to record a live album in 2002, appropriately titled, Willie Nelson & Friends, Stars & Guitars.

This all-time favorite was originally written by Willie and an equally memorable superstar, Waylon Jennings way back in 1969 while they were resting their heads at a Fort Worth, Texas motel. Believe it or not, what inspired the dynamic duo to pen the lyrics was an ad promoting none other than Ike and Tina Turner. Turner was referred to as a good-hearted woman in love with a two timing man.

Waylon had been watching television, while Willie tested his luck in a local poker game. Waylon tracked his buddy down and pulled up to the gaming table to discuss his idea of writing about a good-hearted woman. This, folks, was history in the making.

Ultimately, the two finished their masterpiece-of-a-song while Nelson’s then-wife, Connie Koepke, kept track of the free-flowing ideas. Little did they know a hit song was about the be born!

Jennings decided to record the song, featuring it on his 1972 album by the very same name. It zoomed to the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Singles, just missing number one by a couple of spots.

The cowboy compadres later recorded the song together and watched it soar to number one! It even won the Single of the Year award by the Country Music Association and firmly established these two country singers as voices to be reckoned with.

If you can remember that far back, you’ll know these two bad boys were up to something good. Do you remember this song? What memories does it bring back?
